The talk will focus on approaches towards automated procedures that contribute to the enhancement of creative culture and human knowledge through technologies in design and architecture. On one hand, it looks at the robotic arm as a symbol of automation of physical tasks, on the other – at the use of machine learning and other data-driven strategies incorporated in the design process for the automation of human knowledge. The talk will navigate through projects that re-evaluate the robotic arm’s industrial heritage and production line as its natural habitat. Through the digital tools, this generic machine has gained the capacity to build multiple identities and its alternative uses like post-industrial fabrication in democratised and non-standard fashion; became a medium of artistic expression in performative manner of processes ranging from those highly automated towards more responsive and interactive ones, or serves as a catalyst for the development of innovative ideas. This lecture reflects upon the evolution of the relationship between human and technologies from binary and exclusive, towards more inclusive interfaces beyond rigid boundaries of either human or machine primacy, natural/artificial intelligence, digital/physical and subject/object relationships.
