Masterclass 6: Luke Franzke & Clemens Winkler
Emotional Machines - Training Neural Networks for hysterical interventions
Computer models, driven by AI have proven highly useful in understanding and predicting the behaviour of climate, economical or sociodynamic systems. Could similar models interpret the fussiness of our cognitive processes, and perform decisions as we would? Emotion is a key factor driving our decision making, particularly in creative and ethical concerns. If a machine is too replicate or replace our creative or ethical capacity, perhaps we must first condition it to understand emotion. In this workshop we will attempt to train Artificial Neural Networks to recognise emotionally charged material, and use it to autonomously control a weather machine.
Clemens Winkler
Clemens´ work is focusing on articulation and mediation techniques mostly by creating or re-excavating material-based languages. Besides his own studio practice, he joined the Interaction Design team and the Enactive Environment research group in 2013 at the University of the Arts, Zurich and since then he is working as a research associate and lecturer at ZHdK. He is also tutoring and guest teaching in the Material Futures Department, Central Saint Martins, London and the University of the Underground at Sandberg, Amsterdam. Prior, he has studies at the MIT Media Labs, Boston and graduated in Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art, London.
Luke Franzke
Luke Franzke is a Research Associate at ZHdK. Luke completed his bachelor's degree in multimedia from Victoria University, Melbourne in 2006 and has several years experience in UI design and development. He joined the research group Enactive Environments through the Master Design in Interaction Design at the ZHdK. In the group, he has developed new digital devices from ephemeral materials. Luke teaches digital fabrication and basic programming skills, as well as exploring the field of new material technologies in interaction design.
